Transparent Sea

West Australian Maritime Museum, Fremantle

Situated prominently on the Western Australian Maritime Museum’s balcony looking out to the Indian Ocean, the magnificent glass whale shark sculpture from Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe 2013 exhibition Transparent Sea has found its permanent home.

The Vaughn Bisschops sculpture was generously donated by Andrew and Nicola Forrest through the Minderoo Foundation. Andrew and Nicola Forrest are generous and enthusiastic supporters of the work of the Museum and the Western Australian Museum is grateful to them once again for this magnificent gesture.

The three metre whale shark sculpture was designed to play with light that constantly flickers and interacts with the glass to create a piece that changes with the conditions and the environment. As the marine emblem of Western Australia, the whale shark symbolises much about WA – its magnificent coast, its biodiversity and its burgeoning environmental tourism industry. The whale shark also epitomises the work of the WA Museum, particularly in the realms of biodiversity research, and in understanding and interpreting the marine environment.
